Behind the Dom

I was commissioned by design studio Kummer & Herrman and the KF Hein Fund to make this screenprint as a tribute to the beautiful building their studio is based in. This partly medieval building ‘Behind the Dom 14’, housed Utrecht’s post office in the 19th century up until 1924.

Much more room was needed by 1924, so the post office moved to the giant building we all know at Neude. This is where the library is nowadays.

After the post office, number 14 became a museum of barrel organs. The old Speelklok Museum. After that, in the late 80’s the building became part of the Central Museum. In the 90’s, the upper floors were made available for public housing, while the ground floor in the meantime has housed various design studios and creative initiatives over the years.
All this history I tried to put together in this screenprint.

The illustration will also be published in a little book where it accompanies a story by Anne Broeksma who spend the night here dancing with her partner.
In this book you can find more beautiful stories and illustrations by local writers and illustrators about old Utrecht monuments. Made possible by KF Hein Fund.
